GENERAL ORDERS, No. 34
OF THE ARMY,
ADJUTANT GENERAL'S OFFICE,
Washington, June 1, 1892.
The following has been received from the War Department:
WAR DEPARTMENT, Washington, June 1, 1892.
By direction of the President the retirement from active service, this date, by operation of law, of Brevet Major General David S. Stanley, brigadier general, U.S. Army, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved June 30, 1882, is announced.
The Secretary of War, in making this announcement to the Army, refers, with pleasure, to the distinguished services of General Stanley, well known to the country and recorded in its archives, through his various commands, inclusive in an Army corps.
In November, 1862, he merited and received the rank of major general of Volunteers, which he held for more than three years. In the regular service he has received the brevets of lieutenant colonel, colonel, brigadier general, and major general, for gallant and meritorious services in several battles.
During the eight years he has commanded the Department of Texas, distinction has been added to his services through the skill with which he has managed official duties, involving, at times, delicate relations between the United States of America and the United Mexican States. In his retirement he will enjoy well-deserved rest, with the consciousness of duty well done during his forty-four years of military service.
Secretary of War
General Stanley will repair to his home. The travel enjoined is necessary for the public service.
BY COMMAND OF MAJOR GENERAL SCHOFIELD:
