On December 2, 1864, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 294, announcing that Grenville M. Dodge had replaced William S. Rosecrans as commander of the Department of the Missouri.

I.. Major General G. M. DODGE, U. S. Volunteers, is appointed by the President to the command of the Department of Missouri.
II.. Major General ROSECRANS, on being relieved, will repair to Cincinnati, Ohio, and report by letter to the Adjutant General of the Army.
