On July 28, 1864, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 237 appointing Lew Wallace to command the 8th Army Corps.

I... By direction of the President, Major General WALLACE, commanding the Middle Department, will resume the command of the 8th Army Corps, and other troops serving within the Department from which he was temporarily relieved in General Orders, No. 228.
II.. .The troops of Major General HUNTER'S command, temporarily assigned to the forces under Major General WRIGHT, in General Orders, No. 229, are, by direction of the President, hereby relieved from such assignment.
