General Orders, No. 28 (U.S. War Department) (January 22, 1864)

On January 22, 1864, the U.S. War Department issued General Orders, No. 28, replacing Major General John M. Schofield with Major General Willaim S. Rosecrans as commander of the Department of the Missouri.

War Department, Adjutant General's Office
Washington, January 22, 1864

By direction of the President of the United States, Major General W. S. Rosecrans, U. S. Volunteers, is appointed to the command of the Department of Missouri.

Major General J. M. Schofield, on being relieved from his command by Major General Rosecrans, will report for duty to Major General Grant, at Chattanooga, Tennessee.
