General Orders, No. 2 (Headquarters of the Army) (January 7, 1862)

On January 7, 1862, Major General George B. McClellan issued General Orders, No. 2 creating the Department of North Carolina and naming Brigadier General Ambrose E. Burnside as commander.

Headq'rs of the Army, Adj't General's Office
Washington, January 7, 1862

The State of North Carolina will hereafter constitute a separate military command, known as the department of North Carolina, under the command of Brigadier General Burnside.
