Schofield's Dispatch to Grant Assuming Command of the Department of the Ohio (February 9, 1864)

On February 9, 1864, Major-General John M. Schofield informed Major-General Ulysses S. Grant that Schofield had assumed command of the Department of the Ohio.

KNOXVILLE, February 9, 1864.

Major-General GRANT:

I arrived here and assumed command this morning. I will report the condition of affairs as soon as possible.
