George Henry Thomas was a prominent Union general who served primarily in the Western Theater of the American Civil War. A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy and a career army officer, Thomas chose to remain in the service of his country rather than side with his home state of Virginia when the war began. Thomas commanded the first noteworthy Federal victory of the war at the Battle of Mills Springs in Kentucky. Thomas was also present at the Battles of Shiloh, Corinth, Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, and most of the engagements of William T. Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. At Chickamauga, Thomas earned the nickname "Rock of Chickamauga." During John Bell Hood's Franklin-Nashville Campaign, Thomas directed the Federal forces that crushed the Army of Tennessee, culminating with the Union victory at the Battle of Nashville, which effectively ended the last major campaign in the Western Theater.
