Special Orders, No. 240 (CSA) (October 14, 1862)

On October 14, 1862 the Confederate War Department issued Special Orders, No. 270 announcing the promotion of John C. Pemberton to lieutenant general and expanding his command to include forces in Southern Tennessee.

Adjt. And Inspector General's Office
Richmond, Va., October 14, 1862

XXIV. Maj. Gen. John C. Pemberton having been appointed lieutenant-general by the President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, will assume command of the forces intended to operate in Southern Tennessee in addition to the command assigned to him in Paragraph I, General Orders, No. 73, current series.
